A Technique for Fault Tolerance Assessment of COTS Based Systems
نویسندگان
چکیده
This paper investigates the feasibility of emulation of source code software faults directly in Java byte code. Experimental results show that software defects introduced in source code can be emulated in Java byte code with high level of confidence. This makes it possible to validate the dependability of Java programs with respect to realistic software defects embedded within used COTS components without the need to know the source code. First it is investigated with good results how well the fault locations found at byte code level maps to the source code. Next the behaviors of the byte code level mutants are compared with the corresponding source code mutant behavior. In a back-toback comparative study with 2210 mutants based on ten representative programming defects, no difference in the program behavior between source and byte code level mutants could be distinguished.

Safety Assessment of Systems Embedded with COTS Components by PIP technique
The difficulties to assess reliability of systems that use COTS components are sometimes compounded by the inaccessibility of some COTS codes. This paper develops an approach of Perturbation of Interface Parameters (PIP) to simulate failures of COTS components. It is to validate the use of PIP as a fault-injection technique to test COTS components and surrounding systems. Tests of a nuclear pro...
متن کاملAnalysis of a Multi-Layer Fault-Tolerant COTS Architecture for Deep Space Missions
Fault-tolerant systems are traditionally divided into fault containment regions and custom logic is added to ensure the effects of a fault within a containment region would not propagate to the other regions. This technique may not be applicable in a commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) based system. While COTS technology is attractive due to its low cost, they are not developed with the same level ...
متن کاملAn approach to fault detection and correction in design of systems using of Turbo codes
We present an approach to design of fault tolerant computing systems. In this paper, a technique is employed that enable the combination of several codes, in order to obtain flexibility in the design of error correcting codes. Code combining techniques are very effective, which one of these codes are turbo codes. The Algorithm-based fault tolerance techniques that to detect errors rely on the c...
متن کاملCOTS-Based Fault Tolerance in Deep Space: Qualitative and Quantitative Analyses of a Bus Network Architecture
Among the COTS applications in the X2000 architecture for deep-space missions, the use of commercial bus standards is the highest-payoff COTS application since a bus interface has a global impact and enabling effect on system cost and capability, respectively. While COTS bus standards enable significant cost reductions, it is a great challenge for us to deliver a highly-reliable long-term survi...
متن کاملSystem fault-tolerance analysis of COTS-based satellite on-board computers
Fault-tolerance analysis reveals possible system behavior under the influence of faults. Such analysis is essential for satellites where faults might be caused by space radiation and autonomous recovery is needed. In this paper we present a statistical simulation approach for fault-tolerance analysis of satellite On-Board Computers (OBCs) that are based on Commercial Off-The-Shelf (COTS) compon...
متن کاملStability Assessment Metamorphic Approach (SAMA) for Effective Scheduling based on Fault Tolerance in Computational Grid
Grid Computing allows coordinated and controlled resource sharing and problem solving in multi-institutional, dynamic virtual organizations. Moreover, fault tolerance and task scheduling is an important issue for large scale computational grid because of its unreliable nature of grid resources. Commonly exploited techniques to realize fault tolerance is periodic Checkpointing that periodically ...
